As a seasoned sound designer, Mitchell's expertise lies in translating directorial vision into a seamless soundscape that fully engulfs the audience in the theatrical experience. With a rich background encompassing 7 years of audio, Mitchell excels in the creation, mixing, and recording of audio specifically tailored for live theatrics. Proficient in the utilization of Allen and Heath hardware, Qlab software, the Dante network, and Pro Tools, Mitchell is equipped to deliver top-notch audio services.
Mitchell aspires to take on challenging projects that not only showcase his skills but also contribute to his continual growth as a technician and engineer. Throughout his career, Mitchell has contributed to dozens of theatrical productions, assuming various roles. However, it is within the domain of audio that he has cultivated a deep expertise and unwavering passion. Mitchell looks forward to embracing new opportunities that allow him to push the boundaries of his abilities and make meaningful contributions to the world of theater.
Mitchell has worked extensively with QLab Pro Tools and L-isa to create immersive aural landscapes and vocal FX for shows. His proficiency in Pro Tools extends to recording and refining live productions, showcasing a meticulous approach to ensuring high-quality audio. Mitchell was a part of the Grammy Recording Camp mentored by Yáng Tan learning about the complex world of studio recording. Because of this inspiration, Mitchell has started working with a local artist and a team of musicians to produce and mix a country album.
Mitchell also works with Dante Systems regularly and holds a level 2 certification attesting to his deep knowledge in large-scale system design and upkeep. This allows Mitchell to stay tuned in to a wide range of digital audio systems and their deployment into venues.
Mitchell has spent the past few months working on 3D sound designs that involve complex aural landscapes to help create an atmosphere in the room, along with helping to tell the story beyond the visual. He utilizes L-ISA and Pro tools to integrate vocal FX into the surround sound speakers and all the pre-recorded sounds that play through Q-labs. This allows flexibility to whatever the director wants, and what fits the show and the scene's atmosphere.
I have been a sound designer for recent productions at my high school. I have used this design process to bring the artist's and director's vision to life.
Analyze the project
Create a concept and pitch it to the director and the technical director. Tools: Google Slides and Sheets
Create the aural landscapes and specific sound effects. Tools: Q Lab
Create a surround sound system and integrate the sound effects. Tools: L-ISA
Create system diagrams and redundant systems to give to A1 and A2. Tools: OmniGraffle
Fine-tune the sound of the SFX, actors, and pit for the duration of the show. Tools: Venue's soundboard (SQ7, D-Live)
Record the show for later analysis and improvement. Tools: Pro Tools
The most challenging part of this process for me in the past year has been creating the surround sound systems and passing off documentation to the A1. The surround sound has been difficult because I have had to learn several new pieces of software and how to interweave them. This has pushed me to grow and develop however I still have lots to learn. My struggles with creating diagrams and passing them off to the A1 comes from relinquishing the project that I have put my soul into for the past several months to someone else. Functioning as part of the larger audio team is very important to me and I hope to continue to grow and learn how to communicate with those around me so that not only can I bring the directors vision to life but the shows board operator can help bring my artistic vision to fruition.
Pictured here is a script analysis. Mitchell created this document over several read throughs of the script in the beginning part of the design process. These designs were later translated into reality or modified to fit the constraints of the show and the directors desires.
